A little over three years ago, I started on a journey. I didn’t know where it would lead. I didn’t know how I would get to where I was going. I just knew I had to go. What I did know is that a life of self-employment was the life for me. That is a pre-requisite for this ride – an absolute obsession with living a life to your own rhythm. It is that obsession that will get you through the times of doubt. It is that obsession that will get you past discouraging words from friends and family. It is that obsession that will carry you through the times when the cash isn’t flowing like wine. The obsession is what will fuel your fire to get up everyday and create. It will chain you to your desk writing email after email to your dream clients. It will keep you up until five am getting the colors just right for that project due the next morning. Most of all, it will keep you telling people I love what I do, and will have it no other way. 

Does this sound like you? Well welcome to the community of lovable lunatics. I mean that in the best way of course. If you are reading this, you are likely driven, equally as obsessed, a dreamer, and most of all passionate about art and life. 

Before I go any further, I am compelled as always to make one thing extremely clear. I do not now, nor have I ever professed to have all the answers. Everything here is solely written from my personal experience and things I have learned on my journey. The subjects I discuss will be mainly from a licensing perspective and creating artwork for consumer products. If you are a fine/gallery artists, this may not be the book for you. However if you are a fine artist looking to explore the world of licensing, this could be of value to you. If you have read either of the other two books, you will know that writing is never a planned thing for me. It usually happens after a major milestone in my journey, and has a tendency to come out like a very cathartic journal entry. Confessions was written literally one week after returning from my first trade show. I wrote and wrote until 5am because, well, I just couldn’t stop. SHOWSTOPPER was a result of the overwhelming response to Confessions. Now here we are at OBSESSED. Things are moving in a different (fantastic) direction at warp speed, and once again I feel compelled to write. Please always remember that there are many, many paths to success. My hope is that my writings will help you to find and create your own way. 

So OBSESSED – What is it all about? There are so many facets of really making this way of life a go. The creating, although the best part and the reason we all start on this journey in the first place, is only a piece of the story. There is a real business that has to run in order to make this life possible. That is where the real obsession comes into play. You have to be willing to not only nurture the business side, but also learn some things you probably never really wanted to learn. However, if you are really obsessed, you will do it, and do it with gusto. If you are ready to go down the rabbit hole, I am thrilled to share the pieces that make my little engine go.
